Having bad credit and bad credit card habits go hand in hand. Learning to adapt to the high fees and demands of the credit card issuers are important in today's economy. Those who don't take the time to understand their credit card terms of service are those who are most at risk of falling out of favor when it comes to applying for a new credit card or loan. Since credit cards are plastic and look nothing like money, it may be easy to spend it without thinking of the consequences of paying it later. Two essential responsibilities if learned can help in being responsible with credit cards. The first is to remember to pay all of your credit card bills ON TIME. There are now many ways to set up a set schedule that automatically pays for one's bills before the due date. Another important thing to remember is to not pass your credit card limit. However, in any case, your bill should not even be close to reaching its limit. The rule of thumb is to leave at least 20% of space between your charges and your credit card limit. Applying for a credit card when your credit hasn't been so great in the past may prove to be a bit difficult. Although it is possible, you would like to set yourself up to have a better chance at being approved. Even if you have bad credit now, you have ways to increase your credit as well as your chances in getting approved for a new credit card. Having many credit cards is generally good for your credit, however, being responsible is what ultimately decides that issue. If you have many credit cards and are not responsible when using them, then your credit is most likely going to drop. It is important to control your spending habits to what is most comfortable for what your budget. Having a lot of credit cards if uncontrolled may be more detrimental than helpful in boosting your credit. Having control of all of your credit cards which means to know when the bills are due and to be able to pay all them on time is a great way to start building your credit correctly. If it seems like you do not have control of your credit cards, it is best to pay off the ones with the least debt and then to cut up the plastic cards as to reduce the temptation on using that card again if not necessary. Do not cancel or close the account but rather just close the account in your mind. Keep only a few credit cards possibly a few with different issuers such as Visa, AmEx, and Mastercard in your wallet. There is one thing that most credit card holders do not know about their fees. During peak parts of the year, such as holidays, credit card issuers raise their interest rates. This is something most people are not aware of but now that you are packed with this knowledge, you'll be better prepared during the holiday season and purchasing. Using cash when possible is another good way to avoid bad credit card habits. When you use cash, you'll have the peace of mind that there are no bills to be billed to you later on and that your purchase has already been paid for. Reward points do sound enticing, but remember credit card companies offer these reward for a reason. Their main goal is to make money, not to save you money. It is best to remember these tips the next time you whip out that plastic. About the Author: Want to better your credit?
