With the unemployment rate at its highest in years, there is a bigger pool that employers can hire from, so you have to make yourself known. A good way is by checking out job fairs in your area. It is a good way to meet others and start networking. It is important that you have the right attitude when you attend a job fair, so you get the most out of it.

Joe received his layoff notice on a Friday. After a week at home, he knew he had to get out and make some contacts. He found and landed his last job at a job fair, and soon discovered on the Internet there was a tech fair in his area the following week.

Joe felt certain that today was the day he was going to find a job! When he arrived at the job fair he was not so certain anymore, once he realized how many people were there for the same reason. He was not prepared for what he encountered. As he made his way through the crowded aisles, he ran into people he had not seen for a while. Joe was very confused about what he was supposed to do next. Once Joe's friends explained what he "needed" to "master" job fairs he felt at ease.

Top 10 Tips:

1. Once inside, get a list of participating companies and choose which companies interest you. Spend your energies on them rather than wandering from booth to booth.

2. You can view job openings using a listing sheet located inside the fair. Another way would be to use a computer to check openings if one is available.

3. Find the map of the floor plan - located where you check-in. Decide what is the best way to get to each company you want to visit.

4. Stay upbeat and energized. Try to make an impression through your enthusiasm about the work. Also try to engage the company representative in conversation about the company, and listen to what the rep has to say.

5. Talk to the person who is hiring for the position you are interested in. Recruiters can be helpful regarding the company and what they are seeking, and human resources personnel can give you information on the hiring process and the company, but you can get more information about the job position by talking to the hiring manager.

6. Tell the interviewer how you can be an asset to the company. Know what you are going to say about "who you are" and "how you can help" the company grow -- keep it under two minutes. First impression does matter when interviewing for a job, so make it count. Remember to leave something unique about you with the interviewer - your personal brand.

7. Collect businesses cards from people you talk with so that you can call to check the status of the position.

8. Don't forget to follow up by mailing your resume to the appropriate departments. Tell them you enjoyed the job fair and talking to -- (give the name of the person you talked to.) Share with them that you can see yourself filling the position. Tell them you are the answer to their dilemma, and you can resolve their problem.

9. Check back in about a week with a phone call to see if the position is still available.

10. Use the job fair as one of many sources in planning your job search. Do further research on participating companies by visiting their Web sites and checking for additional openings and opportunities.

Try not to be overwhelmed by the size of the job fair or the number of job seekers in attendance. Keep focused on the companies you want to interview with. Don't be discouraged if you don't go home with a job offer or formal interview lined up. This should be just one step in your research and networking process.

Follow up with contacts you made during the job fair, you just might strike gold with one of those contacts! Stay on track -- job opportunities sometimes come from the least expected sources at the most unexpected times.
