Many years ago I worked at a local mall in the Atlanta area at a restaurant in the food court. We sold the usual fare of burgers and fries and dessert items. I usually was on duty during the busy lunch and dinner hours which I admit made the time just fly by. Something strange happened one day though. We had just gotten a visit from my boss' boss and soon after my boss gathered the whole crew and told us we had declining sales. As it turns out, the Asian food restaurant next door to us had been beating us in sales and now my boss wanted to do something about it. It was so obvious why we were being beaten so badly in the sales department by our next door neighbor. You see they had the wherewithal to have employees out in front of the restaurant handing out free samples to any and every person that walked by. These days I give away free stuff in my residual income business but back then our team hadn't caught on to this particular strategy. My boss watched what our neighbors did to lure customers for a week before he finally figured it out. He decided that we would basically copy their methods and start giving out free samples to every person that wanted one too. I ended up drawing the short straw and had to be one of the people passing out samples. Doing that all day and having to smile too was a challenge but it taught me a business lesson. It taught me problem solving as a selling method because we were solving the problem of hunger for our customers and reaping the rewards too. The way I saw it was when I helped solve the problem of hunger for my customer and influenced their decision then they were more likely to come to our restaurant when it was time to order more food. This shift in strategy as a teenager helped me in adulthood because now my sales approach in my residual income business is based around giving away something of value for free in order to help a customer solve a problem. If all it takes to grow a residual income business is to give away valable freebies then I would rather do that for the rest of my life than not.
