There are multiple options when it comes to insuring the residents of Tennessee. There are options to fit most needs, notions and budgets. There are 3 main sources of health insurance. These include, group, individual and state or governement funded.

Many employers offer employer sponsored health insurance. If you are lucky enough to have this option it is often the most affordable and easiest option available to you. Often the employer pays a portion of your premium which can save you a lot of money. And typically all employees and their dependents are eligible.

There are some advanatages and disadvantages to group insurance. First, you do not get to choose the plan or carrier. Second, the premiums can sometimes be very expensive if you have a group with many high risk employees. And even if your employer pays your premium, they may not pay for your dependants.

When the group option is not available or too expensive many residents opt for purchasing their own individual or family plan. Many of the major carriers offer this. You can shop around for the carrier you like and choose from hundreds of plans, benefits and premium rates.

Individual health insurance gives you freedom to choose your plan as you see fit. Many people love this freedom. They do not have to be stuck in the low benefit plan their employer offers them. The disadvantage some people may have is that they individually underwrite. So if you have a medical condition that is high risk they may decline you.

The Access TN program is a risk pool option for Tennessee residents. This is health insurance for individuals that have been declined insurance due to a medical condition. There are a couple of more specialized options as well.

There is also a state funded plan that covers pregnant women and children up to age 18. The Tennessee CoverKids health insurance program supplies health insurance for eligible residents who do not qualify for low income options, but can not afford any other option on their own.

The Tennessee Department of Human Services can help those residents who are low income with the government funded Medicaid and Medicare programs. With all of these options the residents of Tennessee should not have to go without insurance. Simply choose the option that matches your needs.
