Tickets and moving violations make it more difficult for you to enjoy affordable car insurance. But note that it does NOT in anyway make it impossible. The following should help you take charge and drive down your rates... 1. Don't be too hard on yourself and don't see yourself as a reckless driver because of this. That image won't help. Having the right perspective makes it easier for you to deal with the situation. If you can deal with it then you can avoid it reoccurrence. 2. If you are sure that you were wrongfully charged, take steps to seek redress. That's what traffic courts are there for. And if you do get a reversal, make sure your rates are lowered to reflect this. 3. You should pay high rates that result from your moving violations for as long as they remain on your driving records. However, once they are removed from your records, you should get a slash in rate (This should be at the end of three years -- Some states keep theirs for up to five years). But painfully, some folks keep paying these high rates long after they've been removed from their records. Don't wait for your insurer to revisit your rates with the view to review them downwards (although they should). Take the initiative. Inform your agent and don't stop until you see a considerable reduction in your rate. If what you see isn't satisfactory, switch insurers. 4. If you agree to take traffic school your moving violation can be dismissed. This is available in some states and only for some types of moving violations. 5. Look for an auto insurer that specializes in underwriting high risk drivers. Such an insurer will be able to treat your case on its merit rather than lumping you together with worse drivers. This should help you get some savings. Get and compare quotes from a wide range of reputable insurers. This is because their rates can vary from slightly to very widely. Differences over a thousand dollars are NOT uncommon.
