If you're a college student or a parent of a college student worried about health insurance through the college years, you're not the only one. New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is currently investigating the deals between health insurance companies and universities. Specifically, Cuomo would like to end universities mandating that students buy certain health plans in order to get in. This is generally targeted to those that are getting monetary incentives in return for doing so. Even though a lot of students have health coverage from their parents, a lot of times the university health center does not take that coverage, states the NEw York Times. Ridiculously, the health centers will only take the coverage htat the university prefers. "[Offending] campus health centers do not accept [their parents' coverage] as payment for service. Instead, some schools force the student, as a condition of enrollment, to purchase health insurance policies offered by the school," stated James A. Boyle, president of College Parents of America. Cuomo has subpoenaed and formally requested from several New York universities the records of their dealings with health insurance companies."With students and their families being financially squeezed at every turn, colleges must ensure that they are looking out for students' best interest first and foremost as opposed to their own financial bottom line," said one of Cuomo's special assistants.
