It doesn't take very long for the mountains in many European countries to go from a pleasant green to white as the snow falls getting the resorts ready for a new season of skiing. Last season's poor snow record is already forgotten as large amounts of snow have already fallen across Europe and elsewhere.

By its very nature, skiing and snowboarding can be dangerous and that is part of the excitement and it is not uncommon for many accidents to occur each season irrespective of the experience level of the person involved. Of course, winter sports insurance packages are available although you will often find that regular travel insurance will cover most skiers or snowboarders if they fall into the novice and intermediate categories.

This is the vast bulk of the market and yes, accidents do happen but they are more likely to be in a controlled fashion, by that we mean on well groomed slopes, with assistance and help on hand. Problems normally occur when the skier has gained sufficient experience to want to try something a little more challenging and to use slopes that are not patrolled. Insurance providers know where the real skiing and snowboarding dangers lie, and there policies reflect this so many of them will restrict the type of cover they provide in these instances.

Skiers who require that extra element of danger need to know in advance what restrictions will be placed on them if they wish to have winter insurance cover; so they may only be covered if they stay within the local area or have a guide with them when venturing off the regular runs. As newer types of challenges have arisen like 'half pipes' as just one example; risks have increased for skiers that want to try something different.

Fortunately it is possible for expert skiers to have winter sports insurance that covers some of these more dangerous activities and this need to be taken out if they want to maintain cover for pursuits of this kind. It is important you check a prospective or existing policy before you travel to ensure you have winter sports cover as you will find with some policies that this is excluded, although it can sometimes be added as a bolt-on to the policy, whereby you pay an optional charge for this cover.

If all this checking is too much then I would suggest looking for an insurance company that has tailor made winter sports insurance packages as this may be ideal if you're an experienced skier. Injuries and accidents aside, a good winter sports insurance package will also provide remuneration should anything else unforeseen happen like the loss of skis or when the resort has been forced to close.

The more expert you are, the more likely you will need more specialist cover than provided by the usual high street provider as mountain rescue and medical costs are expensive and if this requires repatriation then the costs mount up rapidly. There is no good contemplating this information as you are being taken down the mountain on a stretcher with a broken leg so be smart and sort this out before you travel.
