GPS is a special feature, integrated in some mobile phone brands and models, such as Nokia 6110 Navigator, Blackberry Curve 8310, HTC TyTN II, Blackberry 8800, HTC Touch Cruise and Nokia N95 (8GB version).

Generally, phones that have this feature are more expensive and are top of the line models. But as the price of the technology begins to drop, the phones will become better and cheaper as well. Mobile phone makers are waiting to integrate this technology in all of their products.

Right now the main function of GPS is navigation functions. The future holds more uses for the GPS technology and that's what is getting the attention of investors. Eventually, GPS technology can be used to give services that are dependent on location. Emergency services will be able to track down accident victims, businesses will be able to use this technology to track company vehicles and individuals will find other people whenever they require.

The ultimate use of GPS technology seems to be a privacy violation, but the real objective is to make it safer for the public and improve on different services for their benefit. Each country has specific regulations to limit GPS utilisation and the restrictions include the inability to monitor anyone without their expressed permission.

GPS still suffers from the interference of tall buildings and areas that are under development. Technology is working to eliminate this problem. Currently, GPS is able to locate specific areas and roads by locating the person using a GPS-enabled phone. Phones that have GPS functioning are able to get information based on the individual locations.

Another use for GPS technology is network integration. People with mobile phones and networking sites will be able to give information back and forth in real time.

MySpace and Facebook have already begun using this technology with a version for mobile phone users who wish to use the site. Content that is generated by users will now be able to be uploaded easily and effectively by using information on the users location.

GPS technology is still new and its uses in tracking children and other people who need to be monitored is being used effectively, but it can become a problem for the average person in future. This is because GPS technology can be used to advertise various products and services to persons using GPS-enabled mobile phones.
