For many people the thought of moving abroad is just a distant dream. Start off by doing lots of research by using books, magazines, and of course the Internet. This may sound obvious but unfortunately too many people don't do enough research and they find out far too late that they were not fully prepared for a life in Cyprus. What are the main things you should research? Here are the top things I think you should consider: - Get a shortlist of areas that seem to meet your needs and visit them. Take time to explore them. - Consider your family and their ages as this will determine your property requirements and location. - Set a budget and make sure you allow for the unexpected. - You will also need to find out about the laws on starting a new life in Cyprus. Obviously a good knowledge of the area you plan to move to is absolutely essential. If possible you should talk to locals and perhaps people who have previously moved there from another location. They will be able to give you a good idea of what living in Cyprus is like and whether they made any mistakes when they moved which you could perhaps learn from. There is no better way to get to know about what you are letting yourself in for than talking to the locals in the area. If you have kids then they will take priority over where you can live. Depending on their age, schools, a nursery, child minders, and other facilities for children will be essential to a happy life in Cyprus. For example, you wouldn't want to buy a house in the Cyprus mountains if you need to drive for an hour to take the kids to school. The local laws and legal implications of buying property also need thinking about. You need to make sure that you find yourself a good lawyer before you start your property hunt. You'll also need to consider things like pensions if you are retiring to Cyprus. Problems often arise such as building problems, legal problems to do with planning permission and also problems with sellers pulling out of the deal. The laws are obviously different in Cyprus than they are in the UK and America and so it is important to find out everything you can before you even begin looking into properties in Cyprus. Overall living in Cyprus could be great, but you really do need to ensure that you get all of the facts about your chosen Cyprus destination before you actually do move there. If you don't then you could end up regretting the move and you could also potentially lose a lot of money in the process.
